SNL meets ER in DocOpera
Between competing to snag a residency and struggling to get more than four hours of sleep a night, medical school is nothing to joke about. Or is it?
For students at Case's medical school, the quest for the white jacket and pager isn't all work and no singing and dancing. Between rigorous classes and clinical rotations, Case med students carved out time to write, produce, direct, and star in DocOpera, the all-medical-school revue that spoofs the med school life.
In its 20th year, the show includes songs and videotaped skits. Look for Vanilla Ice's "Ice Ice Baby," which was changed to "Push that Baby" (which is a parody about delivering babies) and Britney Spears' "I'm a Slave 4 You," changed to "I'm a Slave 4 School" (which is pretty self-explanatory). The faculty even gets in on the act with a rendition of the Jackson 5's "ABC," changed to glorify the biochemical molecule ATP.
OK, so DocOpera won't help fresh-faced premeds nail the MCAT, but proceeds from the show benefit the Free Clinic of Greater Cleveland, which provides free health care to any patient who walks in the door – and admissions counselors love to see you giving back to the community.
Tickets are $12 and can be purchased at the door. Doc Opera hits the stage this Saturday night at 8 p.m. at Playhouse Square's Allen Theatre. For more information check out www.casedocopera.com.
