The Life Of Galileo

With the recent passing of Pope John Paul II, the Department of Theater and Dance's production of Bertolt Brecht's The Life of Galileo is eerily timely. Much of Galileo's research was labeled as heresy by the Church and much of the conflict of the story is between Galileo and the Church. John Paul officially pardoned Galileo in 1984, 350 years after the scientist was excommunicated.

The play itself is very intellectual and rich in allegory. I have yet to see the show performed, but I've read the translation – by David Hare – that they are using for the show. If you're looking for an evening of light humor, stay home and watch Cartoon Network; Galileo is definitely a "think piece." The play explores the interaction of science, the Church, and the government – a timely topic even today.

Eldred's performance of Galileo is directed by John Orlock, a Case professor of theater. Stephen McCue, a part-time lecturer in the theater department, stars as Galileo and is joined by 25 other cast members.

The Life of Galileo opens tonight at 8 p.m. at Eldred Hall on the Case Quad. Tickets are $5 for students and are available at the door or by calling 368-6262.
