More galleries to close for construction at art museum

Some galleries in the Cleveland Museum of Art (CMA) began closing March 7 in preparation for additional construction and expansion of the museum. The decision to begin closing parts of the permanent collection was made by the CMA Board of Trustees in order to increase efficiency and decrease the cost of construction.

The exhibits that have already closed include part of the 15th-to-18th-century Renaissance, the 19th-century European and American, and part of the 20th-century European and American galleries. By June, the contents of the museum's original 1916 building will be completely closed off.

Of the galleries still open in the permanent collection, the Armor Court is scheduled to be open through Memorial Day weekend, while Galleries 105-108,109-113, the Art of Americas galleries, and the Japanese Prints Special Exhibit are scheduled to close on Sunday.

The African, Egyptian, and Greco-Roman galleries will be open through the weekend of July 4.

The special exhibition "Masterworks of the Phillips Collection" has been open since February 20 and will remain open and on-view until May 29. The closing schedule is tentative and subject to change.

CMA is tentatively scheduled to be completely closed from early 2006 until summer 2006. Information on summer events and classes formerly held in the museum is yet to be released. CMA staff encourages visitors to check for closing updates, which are available online or by phone at (888) CMA-0033.
