Nutrition tips to maximize summer fun

As the school year winds down, it is impossible not to be filled with a hope and optimism of what the summer might hold. Undoubtedly, many students' daydreams are filled with images of laying out covered in tanning oil, scoring the perfect internship, and simply being as far from Case and schoolbooks as possible.

But before your daydreams get the best of you, don't forget to take the time to plan how to keep your body in an optimal state of health this summer.

Take advantage of the fresh fruits and veggies summer provides.

Many students do not get nearly enough of these essential foods during the winter months, due extremely high prices in grocery stores and lack of ripe and flavorful options. Vow to include a few different colored fruits and vegetables in your diet every day this summer. Not only will you experience an energy boost, you will also eat fewer unhealthy foods by filling up on more healthful options.

Enjoy the wide range of summer sports available.

During the summer months, it is impossible not to want to take advantage of the warm weather and spend time outside. Therefore, summer is an ideal time to go on bike rides, play catch, and go for runs while taking in the beautiful scenery and fresh air. Swimming also serves as a great no-impact cardiovascular workout. Participating in these activities will not only burn calories, but build your self-esteem due to the ripped body you'll surely develop. No more using the excuse that you'll slip on the ice when running outdoors, or that all the bikes are taken in the cardio room at Veale.

Be sure to stay well hydrated!

With all the working out and sweating you'll be doing in the summer, it's important to restore your lost fluid stores. Few people realize that by the time they get thirsty, they're already dehydrated. It is a good idea to keep a water bottle with you at all times. Avoid sugary drinks, which are packed full of unnecessary calories. And certainly don't rely on pop to replace your lost fluid pop is a diuretic and will actually result in a greater loss of water.

Practice food safety.

Summer is an ideal time to have a romantic picnic outdoors or a bonfire with friends. However, while out and about, keep in mind a few simple things. When grilling, be sure to cook meats long enough, and don't let any foods that contain mayonnaise sit out for long before eating. The mayonnaise will spoil and can lead to food poisoning, which will certainly ruin the romantic and carefree mood you are trying to create.

Don't catch too many dangerous UV rays.

Although your goal may be to come back to school in the fall with a deep gorgeous tan, keep in mind the long term effects all that laying out will have. As tempting as it is to bake outside slathered in tanning oil or baby oil, sunscreen is the way to go to prevent skin cancer. The sun is a great source of Vitamin D, which has been known to prevent weak bones and can be difficult to get through food sources, but try to limit being in the sun to short amounts of time.

Whatever your plans are for the summer, be sure to relax and enjoy your time away from Case. You'll be back here before you know it.
