How to keep chic in cold Cleveland
As the weather turns colder and the beloved Cleveland snows begin to fall, the first thing on every Case student's mind is what excuses they can use to stay in bed all day. Not all of us have this luxury, though, and for those venturing out into the arctic tundra that is our campus, keeping warm tops that list of things to do.
Just because you need to cover every possible inch of skin before leaving home doesn't mean you have to look bad doing it – hoodies and scrubs have their place, but this year's winter fashions present many options for staying comfortably chic in cold Cleveland.
Last season was dominated by the aptly- named Ugg boots. There is a reason they were created for sheep farmers. Designers have caught on to some of the benefits of the heavy footwear and created more wearable, stylish versions.
If you have money to burn, Timberland has some great options combining warmth and wearability. Department stores like Nordstrom carry a wide variety of boots in the fashionable lace up and mukluk versions. If you are shopping on a budget, Target and Payless offer cute, reasonably priced alternatives.
The greatest thing to happen in this winter's fashions is the return of the puffy down vest/coat. No longer reserved for Marty McFly and your grandmother, down is the hot outerwear piece every snow adventurer needs. Trust me, if you live in Cleveland, you have snow adventures trying to get to class.
For the rare mild November day, both Gap and Gap outlets offer down vests with or without removable hoods. Wal-Mart even has amazing prices on both vests and coats, but for those who are looking for the hardiest wear for trudging across the April snow drifts, a premium company like Eddie Bauer will provide the highest quality and warmth in multiple styles. For the really heavy-duty outerwear, outdoorsy clothing companies like Marmot, North Face, and Mountain Hardwear always carry stylish, high quality options. And remember, be nice to animals – opt for the faux fur trim as opposed to taking advantage of a rabbit.
Finally, whatever you choose to wear to leave you dorm, please choose brightly. Not in many years have we seen such great choice in bold solids, all perfect to customize your personal style and combat the winter's long, dreary gray days. Mix and match hues to your heart's content and don't shy away from something simply because you think it may be too bright or outrageous in color. You never know when the sight of a ridiculously yellow scarf will make someone's day a little happier. I for one look forward to enjoying all of your color choices!
Just because we live in an uncomfortable climate doesn't mean we have to give up on fashionable clothing. This is the year of comfortable, stylish choices, so please take advantage of them. For the budget conscious, use Target, Walmart, T.J. Maxx, and Marshall's. Tip of the Week – to remove salt stains from dark boots and pants, use a clean cloth dipped in white vinegar. It works wonders!
