Swim teams gain victories at Eastern Michigan meet

The Spartan swimmers headed to Michigan last weekend to compete in the Eastern Michigan Division III Quad. Other competing teams included Denison University, Calvin College, and Kalamazoo College; the meet was scored as a triple dual.

The men's team started out on a high note, beating Denison in the 400-yard medley relay with a time of 3:36.96. Senior Chris Cook finished up that relay with a 47.9 split. Keeping the energy high, freshman John Somerville fought hard for his second place finish in the 1000-yard freestyle with 10:19.23, less than two seconds behind the leader from Denison. Senior Justin Daggett scored Case two more notable finishes in the 200-yard freestyle and the 500-yard freestyle with times of 1:47.17 and 4:56.51 respectively, scoring second only to Denison. John Somerville once again showed promise with an impressive third place to Denison in the 200-yard butterfly and topping everyone from Calvin and Kalamazoo. Senior Pat Rodjom clocked in the fastest overall time of 2:12.72 in the 200-yard breaststroke. Case's men finished up the meet strongly with a 3:20.53 400-yard freestyle relay.

On the women's side, Case was able to fight off Kalamazoo in the 400 medley relay with a team of Caitlin Gruenhagen, Janine Machala, Lisa McHale, and Elaine Hou. Senior Lindsey Stahl had an impressive swim in the 1000-yard freestyle, beating out all competitors from Calvin and Kalamazoo with a time of 11:47.24. Senior Hannah Webber turned up the heat in the 200-yard backstroke, and sophomore Becca Winarski clocked in a fast 25.88 in the 50-yard freestyle. Both of these swims were fast enough to top the Kalamazoo competition. The women finished up with a 3:51.17 in the 400-yard freestyle relay, beating out Kalamazoo.

In the end, all points are tallied as if multiple dual meets had taken place. Case's men's team was victorious against both Calvin College and Kalamazoo College, but suffered a loss to Denison University. Case's women's team pummeled Kalamazoo College, but also endured losses to Calvin College and Denison University.

This weekend, Case swimming hosts a tri-meet with Grove City and Kenyon. Competition starts tomorrow at 1 p.m. in Veale Natatorium.
