Free Speech Zone: Center supports all reproductive options
To the Editor:
In response to Ms. Hinde's concern regarding the Center for Women published in last week's issue of The Observer, I would like to point out both the irony and inaccuracy in her accusations against the Center. She stated that "the Center for Women is critically selective in the types of outreach it will offer to women" and alluded that the Center neglects disseminating information on childbirth and rather, focuses on abortion.
However, what Ms. Hinde did not know at the time is that this week, the Center was the primary sponsor of an event on campus that entirely focused on childbirth. In conjunction with the Center for Collegiate Behavioral Health, and the College Scholar's Program, the center hosted an event for students entitled, "What Your Mama Never Told You."
The event was an information session on childbirth and the options a woman has when she decides to give birth. Three prominent local experts were present to talk to women about contemporary options and decisions in childbirth.
I approached the center about hosting such an event earlier this year, and they were not only enthusiastic, but have generously given their time and resources in making it occur. They are interested in working with students and I am grateful to have benefited from them. They are indeed contributing great outreach to the diverse needs of our community.
