Holiday fun for everyone
'Tis the season to be jolly, everyone says. Well, everyone except this university, that is, what with tyrannically mandated exams and other such slavery. So, students of the CWRU world unite! You have nothing to lose but your chains. During this time of year, many other institutions with kinder hearts offer holiday hopes and joys, unlike our ruling Scrooges. Check out a few opportunities to escape oppression:
Theater: As the weather grows cold, warm your hearts with traditional shows like A Christmas Carol or It's A Wonderful Life. Four different versions of the Dickens classic can be seen around town, including the ever-wonderful Great Lakes Theater Festival, staging Cratchit, Tiny Tim, and various spirits for the 17th year, which means they've now got their very own Ghost of Christmas Past.
The Frank Capra classic It's a Wonderful Lif, has been adapted for live action at the North Canton Playhouse, which runs daily shows from now until Dec. 18th. Sounds like an ideal break between finals.
The Cleveland Play House converted another TV holiday staple: A Christmas Story. The BB-gun celebration runs through Dec. 23, with eye-blinding shows every day except Mondays. Leg lamps sold separately.
Christmas trees: Technically, pines are not allowed in dorms. Technically, neither is that George Foreman Grill. (Note: The Observer is not suggesting anything here.) But if you want a Fraser Fir for your family, check out Sugar Pines Farm in Chester Township for the widest selection in town as well as the opportunity to get a tree the real way: chopping it yourself. Technically, saws and hatchets are not allowed in dorms either. If looking and smelling will suffice, check out the Cleveland Play House's free display, open daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. until next year.
Gifts Berea holds a Holiday Show and Sale tonight until 8 p.m. at the Little Red Schoolhouse, sponsored by their Fine Arts Club. It's a good place to find something made by someone's kid, then priced at 100 times the cost of the components. Just like that Xbox 360. Cleveland Potter's Co-op on Kensington Rd. in Cleveland Heights is having a sale this weekend, too. Great place to find that perfect gift for your favorite pothead.
Between watching, sawing, and buying, plenty of diversions abound to escape the insanity added by exams to the so-called "most wonderful time of the year."
