Snowball provides hot groove to combat winter blues
Case Western students have come to look upon the early months of the new year with feelings of dread. Between the return of regular homework assignments and the continuation of harsh weather, many folks may have forgotten that the winter brings some welcome occasions as well. Coinciding with Valentine's Day is the annual Snowball dance, which promises a memorable evening to all who attend. For those looking for excitement around this time of the year, this eventful formal and accompanying fashion show are sure to do the trick.
Snowball was created in honor of class officer Cristina Camardo, an extremely active member of the Case community who died in 2000. It will be held on Friday, Feb. 17 from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. and is off-campus again this year, following last year's successful move downtown. This year's festivities will be held at the Myers University Club. "Myers University removes students from their day-to-day atmosphere, transforming Snowball from a normal dance into a dream evening," said Anita Sadhu, freshman class secretary, explaining the reason for the new setting. "If we held [Snowball] in Thwing Ballroom it would seem like any old event, and wouldn't lend itself to a formal dance as well."
For those who are eager to get their groove on, a D.J. will be present so that attendees will have the chance to dance all night. Perhaps one of the best parts of the evening is the non-dancing half of this extravaganza, which allows students from every class to get up on stage and show off. Class officers and other students will put on the traditional fashion show in between the dancing; fashions include formal wear, retro wear, Case wear, and athletic apparel, and if past years are any indication of the level of predictability, anything goes. According to class officer Elyse Moretti, "freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors will strut their stuff. They are decked out in everything from athletic uniforms to formal wear to professional attire to retro outfits."
Anticipation of the event is high among Case students. Junior Mick Crawford wanted to inform people that, "If you're looking for a place with a D.J., dancing, and decadent dining, complete with fabulous fashion, a Snowball is sure to soothe the soul." Junior Adam Goodrich had similar feelings, saying, "You'll have a snowball's chance in hell of escaping from the fun!"
Tickets can be purchased from any class officer and are priced at $10 for singles and $15 for couples. They may also be purchased at Leutner, Fribley, and Nord.
Dress for the formal is, appropriately, formal: men will require suits and ties or simply dress pants and collared shirts, while in the past ladies have usually worn dresses. Transportation to Myers University will be provided, with numerous shuttles leaving from Thwing throughout the evening. For those who would prefer to drive, parking will be available and directions can be searched for online (3813 Euclid Ave., Cleveland).
Snowball provides an opportunity for students to have a great time dancing, watching the fashion show, and just hanging out with friends. Make sure to buy a ticket so that you won't miss out on all of the winter fun.
