Case professor publishes novel to critical acclaim
Though human, Professor Thrity Umrigar often seems to run on jet fuel. The Case fiction writing, journalism, and literature instructor writes on the side and has produced several critically acclaimed novels as well as book of memoirs. The author of the novels First Darling of the Morning: Selected Memories of an Indian Childhood and Bombay Time had her most recent book published by Harper Collins this past January.[read more]
Case students in dire need of a performing arts center
Last weekend's Eldred Opening of Look Back in Anger drew an almost sold-out crowd. Tuesday's Case Symphonic Orchestra performance drew nearly 200 people. The program for the evening's show included almost 70 Case students names, and also listed the variety of majors and interests of the student performers. Footlighters, Case's musical theatre troupe, finds it easy to fill roles as well as bring in the crowds, and expects to prove it in this spring's presentation of Footloose.[read more]
Development of West Quad extends research at Case
As one of the nation's leading research universities, Case is currently working to further develop its prominence in the research world through the establishment of the West Quad campus.The 14-acre site, which was the former Mt. Sinai Medical Center campus, will feature a community of physicians and scientists focused on various research projects from the basic sciences to clinical research and population medicine.[read more]
Eldred show Look Back in Anger packs a mighty punch
John Osborne's Look Back in Anger broke away from the common rules of theatre when it opened in 1956; a half-century later, it is still a departure from the norm. Jimmy Porter – the show's main character – marked the birth of the "angry young man" as a theatrical device. Jimmy does not seem capable of enjoying anything in life and likes to remind people of that fact. If he enjoys anything, it is berating others, especially his wife Alison and his friend and neighbor Cliff Lewis.[read more]
Home crowd spurs hockey club to playoff-clinching win
The Case hockey team joined the College Hockey East (CHE) conference just a few years ago and is already making its presence felt. With a win last weekend, the Spartans assured themselves a spot in the playoffs. They will play Penn State Behrend in the Valley Sports Complex north of Pittsburgh this weekend.[read more]
Women's track victory highlights strong weekend at Oberlin College
The Case indoor track teams turned in more impressive performances last weekend. Qualifiers for the All-Ohio meet ran Saturday while the rest of each team ran Friday at the Oberlin College Invitational. Even with their top runners busy preparing for the All-Ohio meet, the women finished first while the men came in third at Oberlin. On their way to victory, only two women won events, but because of the depth of the team they were still able to pull out the win.[read more]
