Maimone proves to be a giant on and off the field
Football players are historically listed taller than actual height in programs to give an image of traditional strength and size. The varsity football program lists Santo Maimone as 5'9", meaning the senior defensive back may be shorter, but his character and determination make up for the supposed size disadvantage. A simple look at his impressive statistics will show that Maimone is more than numbers in a record book.
Having been an impact player for four years at Case Western Reserve University, Maim-one enters this sea-son as a two-year captain and a shin-ing example for the Spartans. He carries a 4.0 GPA in his chemistry and anthropology majors with the intention of going to medicine school to focus on radiology. When asked how he keeps such an impressive academic record, even for a non-athlete, Maimone's answer is simple and to the point.
"I don't settle for mediocrity," he said. "I know that I could get a 3.5 with no effort, but that's not good enough for me and I am not going to do less when I can do more."
That statement spreads through more than just his academic work. Maimone is a gym rat, never missing a day in the weight room during the off-season. When other players and opponents may be whining about getting through the snow to train, Maimone is already there and working to surpass mediocrity. That work ethic is part of the reason he believes that he was chosen to be a captain.
"The coaches see that I lead through hard work and example," he said. "I try to lead off the field too, showing the young guys how to do everything the smart way."
Maimone's ath-letic play on the gridiron help sup-port his selection as well. Last season he led the defensive secondary in tack-les, interceptions, and was selected as first-team all-UAA. Maimone's defense can be described as hard-nosed, tenacious, fast, and physical; he is a leader on the field through his actions. Some captains are rousing with speeches, screaming, and intimidation, but Maimone lets his plays on the field set the tone. When he speaks, his words echo through other players' minds, but mostly Maimone's teammates notice his great play and effort, so they tend to follow that.
This captain also adds a great demeanor that most young players can admire. Maimone's amicable personality welcomes in new players and old acquaintances with the same energy. He admits that he is not a big party animal and he is great friends with his teammates – some of them live together. This bond of friendship is his fondest feeling toward Spartan Football, as he has a great relationship with players and coaches. Often in the off-season he enjoys hanging out with the staff, and without that his experience would not be as valuable.
Entering his fourteenth and final year of playing organized football, Maimone prepares one play at a time.
"Honestly, I haven't really thought about this being the end. I just go out and work hard, and get ready to play each week," he said.
After this school year is concluded, Maimone looks to attend graduate school, ideally at the Case School of Medicine so that he could stay here. Given the opportunity, he would enjoy helping out or coaching with the staff that has been through all four years with him. However, academics come first with this man and his help could only happen if the school would allow it.
The 2005 football season is exciting to Maimone, with the defensive side returning so much strength and leadership. Being a team player, he only mentions team goals, such as winning the conference, defeating Washington University, and becoming more visible with the new facility at The Village at 115.
Maimone made one last request. He wanted to ask President Hundert to help him get into the medicine school here. However, after what he's accomplished on the field and in the classroom, he's probably not going to need the help.
