Free Speech Zone: USG vote undermines student-faculty relations
To the Editor:
I was disturbed last week when reading about USG's move to stop the vote for Arts and Sciences faculty, regarding the no confidence vote for President Hundert and Dean Anderson. By passing their movement, they have, in my opinion, effectively voted "no confidence" in the faculty of the College of Arts and Sciences, saying to me that they felt the faculty would not vote in the best interests of the students. If the officers were so concerned about their opinions being known to the faculty, then there was nothing stopping them from discussing this matter with any faculty member on campus, just as there was nothing stopping me from talking to members of my department. However, in the last three years, I have strived (as anyone eventually needing a letter of recommendation has done) to develop relationships with faculty – relationships based on trust and confidence in them to act on my behalf. In turn, I think it would only be fitting for me to say that I no longer have confidence in the officers of USG to act in a way that speaks for any student who, like me, trusts their professors, lecturers, and mentors.
