Men's tennis team continues winning streak
Riding the same victorious vibe as the hometown Cleveland Cavaliers, the Case men's tennis team has won five consecutive matches as they build momentum moving toward the end of the season. Most recently, the Spartans won three matches last weekend as they prepared for the UAA Conference Championships at the end of the month and local rival John Carroll University on Tuesday.
The men's team is now 8-3 on the season after a victory at Allegheny College and resounding home wins against Wooster College and Rose-Hulman. At Allegheny, the men were able to start strong and hold off a comeback effort, as they won the first three single matches and controlled the first doubles to keep a 4-3 edge.
Back on their home court, the Spartans easily handled the Fighting Scots of Wooster, as sophomore Joe Smetona continued his dominance and perfect record for the month of March. Senior Jonathan Waldman won, improving his individual record to 8-2 on the year while Ben Sinder and freshman Kenneth Nguyen also posted individual victories for Case.
On Saturday, the men dominated the opposing players from Rose-Hulman, posting a 6-1 victory. This match was highlighted once again by the spectacular play of Smetona, who rang up his 12th singles victory of the season.
The women's team, on the other hand, has seen better days, as the long, grueling season has had an effect on their play in the latter half of the season. Fighting to the end, the strong individual efforts are not enough to overcome other teams, as the Lady Spartans have dropped four matches in a row.
On Monday, the ladies lost to cross-town rival Baldwin Wallace, 7-2. Sarah Langhorst was victorious in both of her matches. She defeated B-W's Elizabeth Moore, 10-9, at the fifth singles spot and also teamed with Elaine Leung at third doubles for an 8-6 victory. After three straight road matches, the women return home tomorrow to face Ohio Wesleyan at noon.
