Theatre Scene
Cleveland has a lot to offer in terms of theatre, but where do you find it? Here's your guide to finding great cultural opportunities and great dates.
Playhouse Square Center – Located in downtown Cleveland, Playhouse Square Center is a complex of seven separate stages. With Broadway classics like Evita and Little Shop of Horrors as well as the first national tour of Wicked, the McDonald Financial Group Broadway Series at Playhouse Square Center has quite the lineup this year. Playhouse Square Center is also home to the Great Lakes Theater Festival, whose fall lineup includes Amadeus, As You Like It, and their traditional performance of A Christmas Carol. Discounted student tickets are available for most shows at Playhouse Square. Getting there – Take the No. 6 or No. 9 bus downtown on Euclid Ave. to E. 14th Street.
The Cleveland Play House – The Cleveland Play House celebrates its 95th season this year and is the oldest permanent professional theatre in the country. Their main stage series will feature Room Service, I Am My Own Wife, A Christmas Story, and A Streetcar Named Desire, among others. The Cleveland PlayHouse is deeply committed to their New Play Development Program and is home to Case's MFA Professional Actor Training Program. Getting there – Take the No. 6 or No. 9 bus downtown on Euclid Ave. to E. 85th Street.
The Beck Center for the Arts – The Beck Center is a comprehensive cultural arts center in Lakewood, just west of Cleveland. Their season includes Urinetown the Musical, Disney's Beauty and the Beast, The Diary of Anne Frank, The Full Monty, and Lies and Legends: The Music of Harry Chapin. The Beck Center also features various artists in their galleries. Getting there – Take the rapid towards the airport to the West Blvd. stop. Continue west on the No. 326 route.
Kalliope Stage – Located in the Cedar Lee region of Cleveland Heights, Kalliope Stage is Cleveland's newest location for musical theatre. Their production of Cabaret runs through Oct. 16. Getting there – From Fribley, cross Cedar and catch the No. 32 bus going uphill. Get off at Lee Road.
Dobama Theatre – Dobama is a small theatre on Coventry which features contemporary shows. Their current show is called The Goat – or Who is Sylvia. Getting there – Take the south loop greenie to Coventry.
