Free Speech Zone: School spirit should come at any cost
To the editor:
First of all, us "drunken idiots" are the school spirit at Case. We are the ones who get the team fired up to play the games. To really show your spirit, there needs to be a little bit of rowdiness and/or body paint. We are talking about football, where rowdiness and mild violence is encouraged. So, providing a golf clap after the home team scores a touchdown is not sufficient! And I am friends with 90 percent of the Case football team, and they love my cheering. So don't tell me what we should and shouldn't do to get the players fired up. My point is that we are not the problem. In fact, after the first game, the head football coach told the players to come over and thank us for our spirit. You people who attack our cheering techniques while you sit in the library on Saturday afternoon, you are the problem. You wouldn't notice us if there were more of us cheering loudly. And, I'm calling out all of you who don't come to the games. You're part of the problem and you are helping the nerds.
Just because Case is not a Division I school does not mean that we can not cheer like one. Go sit in the "O" Block at an Ohio State home game and see how many "drunken idiots" you see. I also hope that you like the "C-A-S-E. CASE! CASE! CASE!" chant because we invented that cheer (while we were drunk). As for the homecoming game, you can expect us super-fans to show our anger in one form or another. And one last thing, I'd like to ask the person who wrote last week's editorial one thing: shouldn't you be locked in a room somewhere studying?

Editor's note: The term "drunken idiots"referred to in this letter was used nowhere in last week's issue of The Observer. The sole intention of last week's editorial entitled "School spirit on the rise, but comes with responsibility" was to laud those who have contributed to the increase in school spirit, not condemn them.
