Free Speech Zone: Students should partake in alumni events

To the editor:

As a student, I remember what it was like to be invited to alumni activities. I often ignored these events because I thought they were geared toward older folks who focused on the past. Boy, was I wrong! In just a few years (maybe less), you'll be counting yourself among the alumni. We look forward to having you join us.

We are working as engineers, scientists, professors, doctors, business leaders…the list is endless. Endless, too, are the opportunities for you to meet us. And we want to meet you! You are the future, and your success will perpetuate the excellent reputation of Case.

This weekend – Alumni Weekend – you have the unique opportunity to socialize with alumni and faculty from every era, every walk of life and every discipline. One of Case's great traditions is how much alumni have always helped the next "generation" of Case graduates, whether through mentoring, networking, or by hiring them for internships or permanent employment.

Personally, I am proud of my Case education and so I will be involved at the university's celebration of the 125th anniversary of the founding of the Case School of Applied Science. What a historic event! As a 1966 graduate of Case Institute of Technology, I plan to join the hundreds of alumni, faculty and students at panel discussions, department and lab tours, and a gala dinner.

Most Alumni Weekend activities are free for students. A few ask for minimal fees that are well worth it. Free tickets are even being raffled for some events.

I encourage you to take the time to get involved in Alumni Weekend activities. You never know whom you'll meet!
