Dempsey, Preyss named Athletes of the Week
Lady Spartan senior guard Dana Dempsey and junior swimmer Lauren Preyss were named University Athletic Association Athletes of the Week in their respective sports, as announced this week by the UAA office.
Dempsey averaged 21 points on 53.3 percent (16 of 30) shooting from the field as the Spartans improved to 5-1 on the season with a pair of victories last week. She tallied a game-high 24 points, shooting 9-for-15 from the floor (4-for-8 from three-point range) and pulled down seven rebounds in a 71-59 win at the College of Wooster. Three days later, she scored 18 points and registered six steals and four rebounds in a 70-58 triumph over Grove City College.
Preyss recorded NCAA Division III qualifying marks while winning three events at the College of Wooster Invitational, helping the Spartan women to a fifth-place finish. Preyss set a school record and surpassed the NCAA Division III automatic qualifying mark in winning the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:51.63. She produced provisional qualifying times in capturing the 50-yard (24.29) and the 100-yard (52.05) freestyles. It was Preyss's third such honor of the season.
French and Schwen named to All-Region Team
Case sophomore forward R.J. French and sophomore defender Zeyad Schwen were named to the National Soccer Coaches of America (NSCAA) All-Great Lakes Region Team. The announcement was made on the NSCAA website.
French is a first-team honoree and finished the season with 11 goals and 11 assists for 33 points. His point total was best on the team and second in the UAA. He was named to the D3kicks.com All-Great Lakes Region first team last week and was a first team All-UAA selection this year.
Schwen, who was named to the NSCAA third team, was part of a Case defense that recorded 13 shutouts this season, including two NCAA tournament matches. He was a second team All-UAA honoree and second team D3kicks.com selection.
"The recognition for both players is a reflection of their contribution to the team," head coach Dan Palmer said.
