Case students go on alternative spring break

As the new semester starts and classes begin again, you may find your mind drifting naturally to only one thing: spring break. This short week-long vacation from the stresses of classes allows students the rest and rejuvenation necessary to finish school as fast as possible and dash toward summer.

So what options do Case students have for spring break? Of course there are the usual ideas: drive to Vegas or Florida and drink yourself silly. But for students looking to do something a little more meaningful with their time off, Case offers plenty of options. Over the break, which falls between March 10-18, several Case Western offices and clubs are offering several community service and job shadowing opportunities.

For example, the Center for Civic Engagement and Learning is planning a trip to New Orleans to provide aid to the victims of Hurricane Katrina, many of whom are still struggling through the aftermath of the storm and subsequent wreckage. The participants plan to help bring order to a struggling city by participating in programs designed to help the people of New Orleans as well as distributing supplies, and more volunteers are welcome to pitch in. For more information, e-mail commservice@case.edu.

Another less service-oriented option for students is the Career Center's "Career Connection" job shadow program, designed to help students of all levels of education explore different career paths. This program helps to connect students with Case alumni who work in the students' areas of interest. This brief shadowing opportunity is perfect for both students who have clear plans for the future, and those still exploring their options, both post-undergrad and graduate school. No experience is necessary; only imagination and an open mind. The deadline for this program is Friday, Feb. 2. For more information, or to fill out the online application, visit studentaffairs.case.edu/careers/.

Of course, these aren't the only service- and education-related spring break options; just a few ideas. For the upcoming break, do something amazing, something you wouldn't ordinarily do. If you don't have plans or have plans that seem dull, check out one of these great opportunities and others on the Case website.
