Spartan Spotlight: Carrie Stoila
Name, year, major, et cetera: Carrie Stoila is a senior nursing major from Archbishop Hoban High School in Tallmadge, Ohio.
What inspired you to swimming: I had a crush on a boy in my neighborhood who swam, so I tried it one summer.
Jeffrey T. Verespej: Exactly why I started swimmi…never mind! So who is your favorite athlete?
Carrie Stoila: Mike Phelps. It's something about those ears.
JTV: Ears. Right. Any athletic honors?
CS: Surviving four years.
JTV: I was hoping for an exciting answer. Favorite quote?
CS: "Start every day off with a smile and get it over with." – W.C. Fields
JTV: Yawn. Let's go for something interesting. Would you rather fly, be able to mutate, or be telepathic?
CS: I'd like to hear people's thoughts.
JTV: I'm glad that you wish you had that power because I might get slapped if you did. What makes swimming stand out from other sports?
CS: You get to participate barefoot, wet, and nearly naked. And everyone is oddly okay with it.
JTV: Okay maybe you are telepathic. What goes through your mind during a meet?
CS: Mostly, "Wow it's cold" and "How could I possibly have to pee again?"
JTV: It's probably because you break the seal. Come on, don't be an amateur! What's your least favorite thing about swimming?
CS: Being wet and cold all the time, and not having any towels left when practice is done.
JTV: My brain is on inappropriate joke overload right now. If you could participate in any other sport, which would you pick and why?
CS: Maybe figure skating. It'd be kind of fun to flip in the air and land on your feet. And I'd like to know how to spin without getting dizzy.
JTV: It's called spotting and it's not that difficult. What does a swimmer do for fun in this town?
CS: Doesn't drink and wakes up at 6 a.m.
JTV: So we have absolutely nothing in common. Something most people don't know about you?
CS: I am weirdly obsessed with Scrabble, and mildly narcoleptic when it comes to watching movies.
JTV: There's a commonality. I rarely finish watching movies with others either. If you could be once place but Case, where would you go?
CS: Italy. There's nothing better than Italian food and romance. Oh, and I guess there are some nice cars over there too.
JTV: What's it like being a sex symbol to millions of lonely Case guys?
CS: Kind of creepy. I thought there were magazines for that.
JTV: There are. And the top bunk of the bed for the really creepy ones. Do you have a soundtrack for your life?
CS: "Go the Distance," "When the Saints Go Marching In," or "Gummmmmmmmmi Bears."
JTV: Bouncing here and there and everywhere.
