Uptowne Grille too upscale for happy hour

For the next semester this space will feature a weekly happy hour review and competition of local establishments. The Observer reminds you to consume alcohol in moderation and responsibly. To add your comments, thoughts, questions, or offer to buy a beer, e-mail: happyhour@case.edu

By all rights, Uptowne Grille should be hopping with customers during happy hour. The location is excellent and accessible, and the place has absolutely top-notch décor. Unfortunately, the upscale silverware, hand-blown glass water goblets, and the jazz memorabilia liberally spread across the walls don't seem to help much. At five o'clock, the restaurant was filled with an uneasy quietness. The bar was slightly better, but the complete lack of happy hour specials ensured that it wasn't anywhere near full. At other points in the evening, Uptowne has been known to draw crowds, but as a happy hour destination, it leaves much to be desired.

"If you want a change of pace from the Case atmosphere, then it's fine," notes senior Andrew Ibrahim, who lives in the same building as Uptowne. The same could be said if you're looking for a change of pace from other bars or restaurants in the area – the more upscale, 1920s-style environment of the restaurant is definitely refreshing. And, in fact, the restaurant is far more interesting than the bar. It has a full and satisfying menu with a Mediterranean flair, and the portions are more than reasonable. The food is costlier than in most other establishments, but there is a sense that you are paying for the quality instead of pretension. Uptowne also offers several Hookah selections – a unique draw, especially since it is one of the few bars around Cleveland to offer them on the menu.

The alcohol menu, like the food and décor, leans toward upscale options such as martinis and port. There are six beers on tap, a variety of beers in bottles, and a solid scotch menu as well – Uptowne has a very good selection across the board. Although most of the typical drinks are more expensive than at other bars, the higher-end options are a good value – a pint of Guinness was $4 even.

Simply put, Uptowne Grille is a restaurant first, a bar second, and a happy hour destination seventh or eighth. With a full and delicious menu, it would make an excellent destination for a date or evening out with friends, but not an ideal location for a couple of beers after a long day of class.
