Blizzard closes campus

Students take time out of a class-free day to make snow angels in the freshly fallen snow Wednesday.

On Wednesday, Case experienced an incredibly rare phenomenon in the college world – a snow day.

Rapid snowfall early this week caused colleges across northern Ohio to close their campuses Tuesday and Wednesday.

Case saw heavy snowfall Tuesday afternoon that led to the cancellation of evening classes and activities as well as all classes and activities on Wednesday.

Snow days are no more than distant memories for many who have worked at Case.

"I have a clear memory of being closed for snow on April 1, 1987," said Richard Baznik, director of the Institute for the Study of University in Society, "and I know there was at least one closing in the '90s."

Other colleges in the area, such as Cleveland State University just down the road, also closed their campuses.

Students used the day off of school for many different purposes.

"I watched two seasons of 24 back-to-back, no breaks," said freshman Alex Shippey.

"I went to lab for six hours," said junior Pat Shively.

Others used the day to be less productive; students were seen all over campus building snowmen, having snowball fights, and making snow angels.

Students were happy about the day away from classes, though many recognize that the free day may set them back a bit.

"I'm glad we don't have to walk to the quad in this, but it is going to be painful to make up later." said junior Miriam Israelowitz.
