Spartan Spotlight: Steve Young
Essentials: Steve Young is a finance major from Chesterfield, Mo. expecting to graduate in 2009.
Sport: Basketball / Spelling Bee.
Jeffrey T. Verespej: Is that in Spelling Bees or Basketball? I'm unfamiliar. Any athletic honors?
Steve Young: Future player of the year of Division III 2007.
JTV: What an honor. Academic honors?
SY: 4.0 GPA.
JTV: Everyone has to be successful at something. Who inspired you to play basketball?
SY: When I was in third grade, I attended a basketball camp sponsored by Shaq. He proceeded to dunk on me during a drill and fractured several of my vertebrae, inspiring me to pick up the sport.
JTV: I think you mean you picked up your bones. If you could invite any three people to dinner, who would it be and why?
SY: Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton, and Monica Lewinsky.
JTV: Way to hit a joke at the peak of its phenomenon. Favorite quote?
SY: "Did I say two, better make it three!"
JTV: That was Bill Clinton who said that, right? What's your best basketball memory?
SY: Beating Emory by one point in overtime last week to end a 14-game losing streak.
JTV: And your worst basketball memory?
SY: Being on a 14-game losing streak.
JTV: More predictable than the Cavs offense in the fourth quarter. Speaking of that, can you grow a playoff-beard for the entire season à la 'Z' from the playoffs last year?
SY: It'll take me about six months, but it can be done.
JTV: Get working on it now. What goes through your mind during a game?
SY: I wonder what girl in the stands I want to party with after the game.
JTV: So basically you're the Chris Kerr of the basketball team. Or do the girls actually party with you? Never mind. If you could participate in any other sport, which would you pick?
SY: Mudwrestling. I need to develop more endurance for when it really counts.
JTV: Get stronger for the fourth round. I mean quarter. Who would win a one-on-one game, Coach McGuinness or Coach McDonnnell?
SY: Either way, Dave Klink will dominate them both. "Kobe!"
JTV: Domination…Kobe…too much to make fun of. Best part of the college basketball season?
SY: Never changing my underwear after a loss.
JTV: You have no idea how happy I am that you won this weekend. What do you do for fun in this town?
SY: My roommates and I stage playful scenarios with the collection of Barbie dolls I have in my room.
JTV: Oh I remember doing that. When I was five. Finish this sentence: Basketball is like a girl…
SY: Because I'm always trying to score in under 35 seconds.
JTV: Before the timer goes off? So what's it like being a sex symbol to millions of lonely Case girls?
SY: You'd have to ask Dan Whalen. He taught me everything I know.
JTV: I'm surprised it works. What's the soundtrack for your life?
SY: The Lion King soundtrack pretty much sums it up.
JTV: Oh, Elton John. Any random advice for campus?
SY: "Don't monkey with another monkey's monkey."
JTV: Right. Lastly, if they made a movie about your life, whom would you want to play you?
SY: John Amaechi.
JTV: Good call.
