UPB death metal concerts a smash hit
Aug. 30 at the Spot drew hordes of metalheads out to see Lick the Blade and Skeletonwitch. The Spot has been known for its exceptional picks in sweet indie-pop music, but this night was different. The night allowed concert-goers a chance to lift their fists in the air and rapidly thrust their heads up and down while keeping the rest of their bodies still. The atmosphere of 1986 pervaded the campus gathering place.
Lick the Blade's sound is similar to that of Iron Maiden, and the lead singer was well capable of hitting very high notes for a long period of time with minimum vibrato or distortion. Skeletonwitch, on the other hand, is a death metal band, and not without a sense of humor. The lead singer reassured the audience during that concert that, "not all of our songs are about Satan. This one is about the son of Satan."
If you missed last week's concert, you can catch Lick the Blade at WRUW's 25 annual Studio-A-Rama on Sept. 16 in the Mather Memorial courtyard. This free event will be held all day, and feature live music and plenty of sweet bands. It is free and open to everyone.
The University Program Board Concerts committee is continually working to bring a variety of music to campus to please every palate. Spot Nights featuring free music are held every Wednesday at the Spot, under Leutner. Be sure to check out the these awesome upcoming shows:
Sept. 13: To Be a High Powered Executive, with Goodmorning Valentine
Sept. 27: JP and the Chatfield Boys, with Chittlin
UPB is also bringing The Roots to campus on Sept. 30 at Adelbert Gym. Tickets are $5 for students, $10 for faculty and staff, and $20 for community members. They go on sale this week: drop by the UPB office in the basement of Thwing to get yours.
