Eldred season On the Verge of beginning
This year's season at Eldred is set to begin with a bang later this month, kicking off with performances of Eric Overmyer's "joyfully feminist" comedy On the Verge. This playful, witty play in two acts explores the adventures of three Victorian women as they travel through space, to terra incognita (specifically, somewhere east of Australia and west of Peru) and through time, to the future world of egg-beaters and barbecues, and encounter extraordinary adventures along the way.
"[On the Verge] should be a lot of fun to work on," said junior Jessica Agus, who plays Alexandra, the youngest of the three explorers. "It'll be interesting to develop character relationships, since it's a small cast," she said. The cast of four includes sophomore Emily Demko, playing the intrepid leader, Mary; freshman Marie Huntley, playing Fanny; and freshman Max Sills, who plays a wide assortment of roles including a female fortune teller and Mr. Coffee. Already in rehearsals the second week of school, the performers must master Overmyer's witty, humorous language, portray the complex relationships between the three explorers, and learn to move in corsets, in keeping with the characters' 19th-century backgrounds. Overmyer's exploration of language and the universals of human relationships across space and time should provide the recipe for another successful Eldred production; one you certainly shouldn't miss – so mark your calendar now!
Performances of On the Verge will be held Sept. 29, 30, Oct. 5, 6, 7 at 8 p.m. and Oct. 1 and 8 at 2:30 p.m. Admission is $5 for students with ID, $7 for faculty, staff, and adults over 60, and $10 for all others (free admission is offered for students who volunteer to usher at performances, more information can be found in the lobby of Eldred Theater).
