Having been touted as difference-makers by returning veterans of the Case women's soccer team, the Spartan freshmen showed off their talent in last weekend's tournament at Kenyon College. The freshmen complemented the returning leaders of the team as the Lady Spartans went 1-1 to start the 2006 season.

Opening against Wilmington College, Case played with extraordinary energy in its first match of the season. However, the ladies' hard efforts were thwarted by the opposing team as they fell, 2-1.

Breaking out to a two-goal lead, Wilmington held as Case attempted to play catch up but ran out of time. Freshman Kaitlyn Yule scored the first goal of her collegiate career at 65:11 to bring the Spartans within a goal, but they never drew closer.

Sunday brought a new day with new vigor for the women's soccer team as they faced local rival John Carroll University to wrap up the tournament.

"Playing against local teams always amplifies the intensity of the game. Cross-town rivals bring out the best in the team," said junior Katie Skillin. After falling behind early, the Spartans rushed back with a fury to defeat the Blue Streaks 2-1.

Once again the scoring was highlighted by Yule, who scored her second goal in as many days – this one to defeat the opposing team at the 79:54 mark. Her efforts were assisted by freshman midfielder Katie Fromwiller, as Yule scored on a header from her teammate. That play was set up by the goal of senior forward Amber Taylor, who tied the game at 1-1 at 68:33.

Taylor, the leading scorer from the 2005 Case women's soccer team, started the season off well with her freshmen counterparts in leading the scoring for the Spartans. With the two combined talents, there is great potential for this season.

"Playing with these freshmen is really exciting," junior midfielder Meredith Andrepont said. "We have been talking about their speed and versatility on the field, but now that we are into the season, they have a chance to show it off, which will make a huge difference this year. It's great to have them."

Having finished even after the Kenyon College Tournament, the Spartans headed into the week hoping to move ahead as they traveled to Denison University on Wednesday to battle the ranked Big Red team. This Saturday at 1 p.m. the Spartans will play at Wooster to continue their season, which starts with six games on the road.

"We have a long start of the season away from Case, but once we get back to a home game, the games will be great and we look forward to having the fans come out for our home opener," senior captain Amanda Dellens said.

That home opener will on Tuesday, Sept. 19 at 7 p.m.
