Students vs. Faculty
In last week's Student vs. Faculty/Staff Basketball game, the students had a lead as big as 14 before the faculty and staff narrowed the margin to two points with less than two minutes to play. Thanks to some terrific ball movement, stiff defense, and timely free-throw shooting, the students remained on top and claimed victory by a score of 33-30. Steve Osbourne from Housing led the faculty/staff team in scoring and almost single-handedly brought his team back to victory. Jeffrey T. Verespej led the students in scoring in both halves and also drew a late-game decisive charge against a driving opponent to help seal the victory. Both players were awarded the MVP awards for their efforts.
"The student team was much better this year than last year. I think the big difference was rebounding," said Joe Gutowski from the Office of Student Activities and Leadership. "We got very few second shots on offense and I think that had a huge impact on the outcome."
The students, after regaining control of the possession on Verespej's charge, moved the ball around to kill the clock before Kelly Leonard was fouled and made a free throw. The last-second attempt by the faculty was off the mark and the students began their celebration.
"Having slipped a little last year, we regained our composure this year to dominate the faculty/staff game," said junior Nadav Weinberg. "We look forward to another intense match-up next year to defend our title."
