USG elections continue today

Spring, a season of changes, is here– especially for USG, whose elections opened yesterday and end tonight at midnight.

There are 76 students running for 45 open positions. There are, as always, quite a few uncontested positions, but some positions have a large number of applicants.

On the exec board, there are two students running for president; one each for Vice Presidents of Public Relations, Finance, and Student Life; and three each for Vice President of Academic Affairs and Parliamentarian.

For the general assembly representatives, there are 20 students running for 12 open Arts and Sciences spots, 12 for nine Engineering spots, eight for three Weatherhead spots, and three for three Nursing spots.

"We are impressed with the number of Weatherhead applicants," said sophomore Nicole Hofert, the election commissioner. "It's the highest we've ever had."

Class officers are generally running uncontested, but the freshman class has a lot of competition. Four students are running for 2010 president and three students each are running for the other 2010 class officer positions.

"It's good to see the freshmen really getting involved," said Hofert.

"We were concerned about the number of candidates running for office, so we pushed the elections back a week," said David Gasser, VP of Finance. "We got a good response, and a lot of letters of intent."
