USG Briefs

Myles Nickolich, VP of Student Affairs, reported that his committee is continuing discussion on the political speaker policy at Case. The NY Times and USA Today readership program ended on Tuesday. Nickolich also reported that there is a surplus from the initial purchase of plasma screen TVs. Nickolich said that the surplus will be used to buy more plasma screen televisions. Money allocated to the initial purchase can not be used on anything else.

Nickolich and his committee are continuing discussion with 1-2-1 Fitness regarding student access to the facilities. Nickolich said that negotiations have shifted away from unabated access and are now focused on evening access. There will be a test program during which students will receive evening access from Monday, April 16 until Sunday, April 22.

David Gasser, VP of Finance, reported that Mass Funding requests for next semester will be accepted until 5 p.m. today. Next week the finance committee will be hearing presentations from student groups that requested money. A preliminary 2007-2008 budget for USG will be presented next week.

Dustin Fisher, VP of Academic Affairs, reported that course evaluations will be online April 19. A student survey regarding a proposed change in the class grid was sent out Wednesday.

Adam Rupe, VP of Public Relations, reported that on April 6 USG will be holding an open forum to discuss the new Case logo. Preliminary sketches will be presented at the event.

Nicole Hofert, Election Commission, went over the rules of campaigning. All campaigning was to stop on Wednesday at midnight. Polls opened at 7 a.m. yesterday and will close today at midnight. Results will be available tomorrow morning. All of the candidates' letters of intent are on the USG website.

During open forum, Gasser brought up a motion that is to go before the Student Executive Committee (SEC), the organization that oversees the allocation of the student activities fees. The proposed motion would grant voting SEC membership to the Class Officer Collective and fund the Class Officer Collective directly through SEC.

Currently, the Class Officer Collective receives 1.6 percent off the top of the SEC budget. For additional funding the Class Officer Collective must go to USG. This year USG allocated eight percent of its budget to the Class Officer Collective. Under the proposed plan the Class Officer Collective would receive 3.88 percent of the SEC budget and USG would no longer fund the Class Officer Collective.
