UPB stokes the fires of student entertainment

Whether you are aware of its existence or not, the University Program Board (UPB) is one of Case's most active contributors to student fun. Made up of several committees which specialize in everything from concerts to Case traditions to all things crafty, UPB is always busy coming up with new, inexpensive sources of entertainment for Case students. And just because there are only a few weeks of school left doesn't mean that UPB is showing any signs of slowing down. Here are just a few of the events UPB has in the works for the next month.

Toronto Trip – Fifty-one lucky undergrads will be heading to Toronto for the weekend starting Friday, April 13; the trip includes bus transportation to the beautiful Canadian city, as well as a show at Second City Theatre, the locale that launched Mike Myers' career, for the student-budget friendly price of $50. Unfortunately this trip is full, but stay on the lookout for forays outside of Cleveland next year.

A Cappella Night – The number of a cappella singing groups on campus is growing with each passing year, providing singers and listeners with a wide variety of music to enjoy. From 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday, April 13, Blue Jupiter, a nationally touring a cappella group, will perform at the Rough Rider Room with other campus groups, including Case in Point and Speakeasy. Whether you're an a cappella fan or not, this is a concert worth checking out.

Upright Citizens' Brigade – Thursday, April 19, the Upright Citizens' Brigade, a professional improv comedy troupe, will stage a free show, courtesy of UPB, at Strosacker Auditorium from 8 to 10 p.m. The show, which promises to provide two hours of non-stop laughter, will be kicked off by Case's own Improvment.

Gym Class Heroes – Though they've been around for years, "alternative hip-hop" artists Gym Class Heroes hit it big recently, thanks in part to their Billboard-climbing tune, "Cupid's Chokehold." Before embarking on a summer tour with Gwen Stefani, Gym Class Heroes will be playing the Spot on April 18 at 9:30 p.m.; UPB is offering free tickets to the first 500 students who claim them, so get them while they're hot.

Springfest featuring OK Go – This Case tradition will feature games, food, and live music all day on Saturday, April 28 at Freiberger Field. But that's not all. This year's Springfest features the three winning student groups from the Battle of the Bands competition, Matty B and the Dirty Pickles, Anamika, and Lunavelis, as well as everyone's favorite Grammy-winning treadmill dancers, OK Go. OK Go was selected to be this year's Springfest headliner after the group got the most votes on a campus survey of possible bands.

In addition to these events, UPB will also host a "Mocktails and Glass Painting" night on Thursday, April 12, as well as Broomball at the Cleveland Heights Recreation Center, and many other cheap or free programs throughout the month. For more information on these or other events, visit the UPB website (upb.case.edu) or the UPB Office, located in the basement of Thwing.
