A Fresh Perspective: Spring forward to exciting memories

It's that time of year…spring is here.

This season brings about a large number of changes. Not only does the weather become gorgeous again after a long dreary winter; spring brings about changes in people too. General mood lightening usually tags along with spring, and people become more personable. But what does this mean for college students?

First, spring usually starts a small panic in the typical college student (at least it does in me). I was preparing my calendar for April with all of my class information and due dates and began to panic a little. There are only three weeks of classes left and this fact can strike fear into the hearts of the steeliest student. Only a few short weeks are left to bring up that slipping Chemistry grade or to finish that huge SAGES research paper. Spring is a time to buckle down.

On a happier note, spring also heralds the arrival of summer. This is definitely a double-edged sword. Part of me is definitely ready for the school year to be over. I'm worn down from doing so much work and being so busy that I want to be able to have a day where there is absolutely nothing on my schedule. How nice it will be.

But at the same time, I'm not ready for summer in the slightest bit. I'm not ready to go back to small-town Ohio and work as a waiter again, scraping together barely enough gas money. I'm not ready to leave behind the amazing friends I've made here for three entire months and I'm not ready for some of my closest friends to be on the opposite end of campus from me next year. I'm not ready to remove myself from this environment where I fit in so completely and go back home to my old, humdrum life.

But alas, this is what spring does. This season always makes me look back to the past, yet forward into the future. Thankfully, when I look back on the past school year, I get a very positive feeling. I have had so much fun this year and learned so much about myself that next year can only be better.

I encourage all of you to try to have this same outlook on the past year. If you look back, and something bothers you, try to fix it before the year ends. Time may heal all wounds, but it doesn't fully restore them to what they were before the initial injury. Don't let spring become a time of panic. Instead, turn it around to a time of celebration and excitement.
