Ask Amy...

Are you ready to tackle your interview? Here's a brief test to see if you're up to the task. The Career Center has provided the answers on our website, http://careercenter.case.edu, so you can study for the real thing. In addition to studying for an interview, you may want to schedule a mock interview appointment with the Career Center. To learn more, call the Career Center at 216-368-4446.

Before the interview:

a. Do a breath check.

b. Prepare hard copies of your work.

c. Turn off your cell phone.

d. All of the above.

What should you wear to the interview?

a. Check the company dress code and dress accordingly. This will show how you fit in.

b. Wear what makes you comfortable–if you are relaxed, the interview will go well.

c. A suit, it's professional ,

d. Your lucky underwear (they never fail).

Upon arriving at the interview:

a. Walk into the reception area and hang around until someone notices you.

b. Tell the receptionist your name, who you are seeing, and why you are there.

c. Find out exactly where the interviewer's office is and barge in on them.

d. Waltz in and announce, "I am here! When do I start?"

What should you bring to the interview?

a. A good attitude, enthusiasm, and a smile.

b. A book to read and a can of pop while you are waiting.

c. Your mother.

d. Your portable TV so you don't miss your favorite reality show.

Tell me about yourself

a. I was born in California and grew up in Rancho Cucamonga. My twin sister and I attended an all-girls high school. I love to go running and am learning how to knit. And my favorite thing to do is spend time with my Chihuahua, Tulip, who comes with me everywhere. He's right here in my bag as a matter of fact.

b. I'm single but no worries because the online dating scene is hoppin'! Your company has Internet access, doesn't it?

c. I have four years' professional experience in the industry, plus two years at an internship during college. My successes include ABC and XYZ.

Why are you looking for a new job?

a. I'm sick of the commute.

b. I need more money to support my shopping habit and social life.

c. Because my parents said so.

d. I feel I have mastered the skills of my current position and there is not a lot of opportunity for advancement.

e. I hate my boss–she is evil and I need to get away from her! Listen to what she said…

Before you leave, ask:

a. Can I work from home?

b. What are the next steps in this process?

c. What does the job pay?

d. How is the vacation time?

After the interview:

a. Send an e-mail or written thank you to everyone you met that that day–immediately.

b. Call the interviewer every day and ask if a decision has been made.

c. Keep looking for other jobs. If you got this one, they'll let you know.

d. Meet your friends at the movies.
