A Fresh Perspective: Relaxation tips for end of the year stress

At this point, most students have reached the one month mark in their countdown to summer break. Looking out the window, I know that it doesn't look very much like April, but the reality is that only a few weeks remain in this second semester. With this comes a dramatic increase in projects, busywork, and tests. As I slowly check off each task on my long to-do list, I wonder when and if I will have time for relaxation in these next few weeks. But even with busy schedules, there are ways to fit in small periods of R&R that will provide refreshment and revitalization.

For me, one of the greatest stress busters is music. Whether it be listening to my favorite CD and belting the songs at the top of my lungs in the privacy of a roommate-less room or practicing my favorite repertoire, music never fails to put me in a good mood and give me an adrenaline boost that cannot be beat. Even if there is no time to block out for music listening, put some relaxing music on in the background while performing those stressful tasks or bring the trusty iPod along for the trek to class.

Speaking of walking, exercise is another excellent stress remedy. During the warm spell a few weeks ago, I played football with some friends. Not only was it fun and good exercise, but it provided a much-needed break from studying and brought my focus back. Once again, even if there is no time to set aside for a football game or a jaunt to enjoy the crisp April weather, walking to class can be exercise. Now is the time to bust out the power walking skills learned in gym class.

As I mention jaunts, another random adventure I enjoyed was a solitary nature walk. I understand that there is not much nature around here but it can be found. Trees, flowers, bushes, snow… the natural suburban wonders are endless. Bringing the trusty digital camera along for the ride provided me with some morsels to import into Photoshop later – yet another stress reliever for me.

If time allows, there is always the opportunity to spend an evening with a trusty pal away from campus. Block out a few hours for dinner or just go off campus on a Friday night. Friends can provide the therapy needed. Talking about your problems with them, or better yet, talking about pointless amusements other than schoolwork, is medicine that will go a long way to treating stress.

Yes, the end of the year is stressful. On the other hand, the stress can be put out of mind for a little while if one is creative and willing to sacrifice even just a small amount of time. Above all though, just remember that the number one stress reliever is sleep. Naps are a student's best friend and so is a good night's rest.
