Spartan Spotlight: Danielle Kendeigh
Name, year, major, and more: Danielle Kendeigh is a sophomore nutrition major from Fireland High School in Oberlin, Ohio. On the track and field team she runs sprints, relays, and also does the long jump.
Years Participating in Track/Field: Eight.
Who/What Inspired you to do Track/Field: I had to learn how to get away
from all those boys chasing me, right? Actually, my older sister was my
first inspiration and the competition kept me going.
Jeffrey T. Verespej: So what happened to the boys chasing you? Oh yeah, it was a joke. What's your worst track memory?
Danielle Kendeigh: That would have to be breaking my wrist in the hurdles my freshman year at conference, hands down – no pun intended.
JTV: Back-to-back awful jokes: is this Everybody Loves Raymond ? What are your athletic honors?
KD: I qualified for All-Ohio in five events and broke the indoor school record in the 400-meter dash.
JTV: Sixty seconds is a very long time. And academic honors?
KD: The laughter here is almost uncontrollable.
JTV: Good point. What's something that most people don't know about you?
KD: I like to eat. A lot.
JTV: You and Shawn Kemp both. What's your best track and field memory?
KD: Whenever I catch (and pass) a girl or two from 50 meters behind in the 4x4.
JTV: I'm going to guess that Kemp has never done that. If you could invite any three people to dinner, living or dead, who would it be and why?
KD: Christopher Walken, Conan O'Brien, and my fiancé, Nick. I think it would make for a very interesting night and wouldn't want him to miss out on it. I mean, come on, Christopher Walken and Conan?!? Who wouldn't enjoy that?
JTV: If they made a movie about your life, who would you want to play you?
KD: It wouldn't matter. Anyone could play me and everyone would still be going to see that box office thriller.
JTV: Yeah, it'd be like Cool Runnings without anything that made the movie good. What's your least favorite thing about track and field?
KD: That, like classes at Case, if you want to get better, you have to do a lot of work.
JTV: I thought you were a nutrition major though. If you could have one superpower, what would it be and why?
KD: I would like to be able to disapparate, for all those Harry Potter fans. That way I wouldn't have to drive through all of the wonderful Cleveland traffic every morning and evening.
JTV: It's a good thing I learned what that was right before this, otherwise I would be staring very blankly at you. What's the high point in your season?
KD: When I break a personal record. So far, that's been every weekend this year.
JTV: Congratulations. If you could be a guy for a day, what would you do?
KD: Run faster, of course.
JTV: You've obviously never seen me run. Do you have any advice to give?
KD: Running is good for you. So is eating healthy food.
JTV: I think that may have been a fat joke.
