Springfest prepares to shake campus with end of semester bash

While most weekends at Case may seem woefully bereft of fun activities, this weekend is definetly an exception. Two of Case's largest student-run events combine to make this weekend quite possibly the best of the entire year.

First on the list this weekend is the annual Hudson Relays, the classic 'clash of the classes.' Seniors vs. juniors vs. sophomores vs. freshmen… and an Alumni team as well. It's a battle for respect, a battle for pride. If a class wins four years in a row, they receive a steak and champagne dinner, compliments of the administration. While the upperclassmen have no chance to win this dinner, Saturday is the freshman class's first chance to win. The relays will start at a brand-new time this year – they are set to begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday morning at the Hudson Relays rock on the Quad.

"We pushed back Hudsons in an effort to encourage students to support their class at Hudson Relays and to bridge the gap between two of the biggest events on campus," said Bruce Douglas, freshman class president

Springfest is far and above the largest student-run event on the Case campus. Each year, the party on Freiberger Field gets a little bit bigger and a little bit better, and Springfest 2007 promises to up the ante once more. While a small committee organizes the event, students from numerous organizations will participate in making this year's Springfest the most amazing one yet. Any Case organization can have a booth at Springfest for free, and this year, over 50 campus organizations seized the opportunity to promote themselves.

Each booth offers something unique and it is amazing to see what Case students come up with. There is a Splash Zone section that features a dunk tank, a fish-filled pool, water balloon tossing, and more. One organization will set up a Jacob's Ladder, while others will let students play DDR or throw pies. If those booths are not enough, keep your eyes open for the inflatable obstacle course, laser tag, the Sticky Wall, and the sumo challenge. And of course, there will be plenty of paint to graffiti the wooden wall currently standing outside of Thwing. You can go home with a SpinArt Frisbee or other free giveaways, as there will be numerous raffle prizes from local business organizations as well.

If anyone is hungry for some delectable food on Saturday: Springfest is also the answer for that. Both Leutner and Fribley dining halls close on Saturday: the employees want to come to Springfest too! Bon Appétit is catering Saturday, providing hamburgers, hot dogs, and more, including an assorted ice cream tray for dessert. Students on the meal plan should swipe in advance at either Fribley or Leutner to receive their ticket for the day of Springfest. Students not on the meal plan can stop by the food booth at the registration table for a meal ticket. In addition to the food tent, multiple booths will offer food such as cotton candy and "yummy molecules." Those of age will enjoy the beer garden, while RHA will roll up the Pepsi trailer to hand out drinks to all who attend.

Free concerts will occur all day. The campus bands chosen at UPB's Battle of the Bands will open for nationally-touring OK Go. Anamika starts at 2 p.m., Matty B and the Dirty Pickles take the stage at 3 p.m., and Lunavelis comes on at 4 p.m. All these lead up to OK Go, who is set to go on stage at 5:30 p.m. OK Go, known for their catchy hit songs and impressive dance moves, promise an amazing show, the likes of which have not been seen at Case in quite some time. OK Go was chosen by student votes in an online poll, which testifies to the depth of campus involvement in this year's Springfest. Case students chose the campus bands;, Case students chose OK Go; Case students have over 50 booths; and Saturday, Case students can forget about work, forget about finals, and celebrate an amazing school year.
