Women's Tennis
Last weekend the women's tennis team competed in the UAA championship tournament. It was an uphill battle before the tournament even began. Slotted as the eighth seed in the tournament, Case was left to handle a top-ranked Emory team. As expected, Emory went on to win the tournament for the 20th consecutive time.
Unfortunately, the second round was more of the same. Washington University swept the Spartans 9-0. The biggest problem according to sophomore Marta Worwag was that the team "beat [themselves]." One match in particular was when Worwag was facing Allison Dender of Washington University. Worwag led after the first set, dropped a close second set, led for most of the third set ,then lost at the very end. "I allowed doubt in myself and my strokes to affect me," said Worwag. "It was the worst possible way to lose that match."
The team finally posted some wins in its last match against Rochester, which the Spartans lost 6-3. Marta Worwag and Kristen Gibbs both won their final singles matches of the year and Worwag and Kristin Ko teamed up to get a doubles win. For Gibbs, it was a matter of correcting her mental game. "Going into the match I knew that I needed to just stay focused and play my own game," said Gibbs. "Winning my last singles match of the season felt great." Hopefully these wins can roll over into next year and the team can bounce back from a somewhat disappointing 2006-2007 campaign.
