USG Briefs

This week's USG meeting opened with executive board reports, with the first coming from President Neil Ursic. Ursic began by speaking about the new Thwing graffiti wall, and that he was looking into drafting a small number of rules regarding its use. One of the rules currently being considered is limiting painting to between 12 a.m. and 6 a.m., so that an organization's message would be visible for at least one day until the next window opened.

There is a vacancy for the Class of 2009 Secretary, and candidates are encouraged to submit a letter of intent. VP of Development Myles Nickolich reported on a survey that will be made available to the undergraduate student body via USG's website, Case Daily, and the USG weekly mailing. The survey will ask questions regarding the Print2Here program, as well as the decreasing of the print quota to 500 pages a semester from 1000 in previous years. The Development Committee is drafting a resolution to increase the page quota to its previous level while lowering the cost of additional pages.

VP of Finance David Gasser reported that student organization funding will be beginning shortly, and that more money would be available this year as a result of increased activity fee revenues.

Afterwards, during open forum, Ursic commented that there was poor turnout of undergraduates at this week's open Presidential Search Committee forum. The overall feeling that there might be a lot of skepticism among the student body that another Edward Hundert would be hired was discussed, as well as questions as to why so many board members are on the committee. There was also consensus that the event was not publicized well enough.

The only resolution of the night was the Finance Committee's budget bill, which was introduced by VP Gasser. There will be an additional $10,000 available to student organizations this year as a result of the student activity fee being increased with tuition. Also, USG's own budget has been reduced from 20 percent of the overall budget to only 13 percent of the total budget. The bill, per USG bylaws, was tabled and will not be voted on until the next meeting.
