Book fair caters to bibliophiles
The Cleveland Book Fair, co-sponsored by Kelvin Smith Library and the Northern Ohio Bibliophilic Society (NOBS), will be held this weekend in Adelbert Gym.
The event will have more than 40 vendors of rare and collectible books, prints, ephemera, and autographs.
Although NOBS has hosted similar book fairs in Cleveland and Akron for the past 20 years, this is the first year that Case will be participating.
"The fair is absolutely wonderful for a book lover," said Ellen Strong, preservation media technician for KSL. "It's like walking into a bakery with all the wonderful smells."
A variety of works will be showcased including art and medical texts as well as children's books, first editions, and paperbacks.
The idea of a book fair that showcases antique and rare books coming to campus is exciting to many students here at Case.
"I like books and I like antiques: what could be better than the two put together?" said freshman Kenny Robinson.
Although the book fair has been mentioned in Case Daily and advertised around Cleveland by NOBS, some students are frustrated that this event has not been more widely advertised.
"A fair amount of people in college would be interested if they knew about it," said freshman Dan Engel.
NOBS was created in 1983 by a dozen book dealers, collectors, and workers who shared a passion for preserving and protecting the legacy of the written word. Now, with over 300 members, the society gives members a quarterly newsletter as well as an annual publication.
The fair will be held at Adelbert Gym today from 4-8 p.m. and tomorrow from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. As an added bonus, the fair will be offering free appraisals on Saturday until 3 p.m. Admission to the fair is $4 or $2 for Case students with valid ID.
