Friday, Aug. 31

The Film Society kicks the year off right with last summer's blockbuster hit, 300. The movie focuses on the brave stand of King Leonidas and his 300 warriors against the mighty King Xerxes and his massive army of Persians. Satisfies the testosterone need in all of us. End the first week of classes with a bluesy finish, as local favorites Prime Directive Trio, and the Elm Street Blues Band play the Barking Spider Tavern. Saturday, Sept. 1

For their second showing of the week, the Film Society is showing one of the classic films of our time, American Beauty. Starring Annette Bening and Thora Birch, the film follows the antics of Lester Burnham (Kevin Spacey) during his mid-life crisis and how his decisions affect those around him. This year's headliners at the Cleveland Air Show are the Thunderbirds, the Air Force's premiere jet demonstration team, accompanied by a whole host of other planes, including the Shockwave Jet Truck. Sunday, Sept. 2

The Crawford Auto-Aviation Museum opens its newest show today, entitled Wings + Wheels: Crawford Memories in Motion, featuring more than 100 cars, planes and motorcycles. Time: 12 to 5 p.m. Cost: $5–8.50. Location: Crawford Auto-Aviation Museum, 10825 East Boulevard. Info: www.wrhs.org

The Grog Shop is hosting Louisville favorite VHS or Beta tonight. What began as a noise-rock band has now evolved into new-millennium dance music, complete with hints of funk, disco, and a dash of new wave. For a completely new perspective on music, check them out. Monday, Sept. 3

Head downtown to the annual Cleveland Peace Show. Complete with activities for kids, poetry reading, and storytelling, the gathering's goal is to teach us all how to live in harmony. Also included throughout the day are socially-conscious bands such as the Very Knees performing, all in the name of peace. Time: 12 to 5 p.m. Cost: Free. Location: Free Stamp in Willard Park. Tuesday, Sept. 4

Culture yourself a little bit by going to the Cleveland Museum of Art's current exhibition, Icons of American Photography. Featuring 116 photographs spanning the years from 1850 to 1960, the exhibition promises not to disappoint any fan of photography, including works by the master, Ansel Adams. Wednesday, Sept. 5

A Cleveland experience cannot be complete without a visit to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Their current exhibit, Break on Through: The Lasting Legacy of the Doors, features the legendary rock band of the '60s and how they are still influencing music today. Complete with artifacts from the estate of Jim Morrison, this exhibit is a must-see for all. Time: 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Cost: Free with Case ID. Location: Rock and Roll of Fame, One Key Plaza. Thursday, Sept. 6

The local Dobama Theater puts on their current production Take Me Out, a baseball-themed play that also deals with the tough issue of homosexuality in sports. The performance has been getting good reviews locally, but with its full-frontal male nudity and hard-hitting themes, it has also been stirring up a little controversy. Time: 7:30 p.m. Cost: $15-22.
