Student group is effecting "real" change

To the Editor:

When my term ended this April as USG president, I didn't know how I would fill my time. I knew I wanted to be involved in campus activities, and a friend suggested I try consulting for new and current student organizations that may need help (e.g. increasing membership, increasing campus presence). It sounded like a lot of fun, and the first group I began working with was Student Movement for Real Change (SMRC).

This SMRC chapter is brand new to our campus and is doing a lot. In just a few months, SMRC has seen a steady membership, a growing campus presence, and several co-sponsorships. They have brought in their founder and executive director to speak, and raised over $700 this past week selling bracelets in Nord to put toward a water pipeline in Kenya. This past Saturday, SMRC had the greatest number of participants in Drag Ball as well, splitting the money raised with Spectrum.

Now that my time helping SMRC is over, I wanted to share with the campus how great an organization it is, and how you should consider getting involved. You don't need to be a pre-med or anything like that; if you feel empowered to improve our world, you should come out. They meet Mondays at 8 p.m. in Wade Fireside.

I am excited to see what SMRC has in store for next semester, and have no doubt they're going to continue to bring real change to this world.
