Mutual respect

After the second round of the football playoffs, it was clear that each coach held their opponent in high esteem.

Case's Greg Debeljak:

"They [Wabash] are a first class program. Hats off to them for the way they played."

Wabash's Chris Creighton:

"Case is a really good, special football team. They're so well coached. That No. 5 [quarterback Dan Whalen] is really good."

Brew up for Gagliardi Trophy

Senior linebacker Tom Brew has been named one of the 10 finalists for the Gagliardi Trophy- widely considered the premier individual award in Div. III football- given annually to the outstanding football player in Div. III.

"This is the greatest honor for any football player at this level and Tom is an outstanding player and is certainly deserving of this honor," said Debeljak. "He's played a key role in our team's success this season and he's one of the greatest athletes I have ever been around."

Spartans earn Athlete of the Week honors

For football, seniors Tom Brew, John Tiemeier, and Mike Tuertscher earned UAA Defensive AoW honors, while Dan Whalen earned Offensive AoW honors and freshman kicker Sam Coffey earned Special Teams AoW honors after the team's second-round playoff loss to Wabash College on Nov. 24.

Senior forward Ashley Horton earned co-AoW for women's basketball after her solid performance over the weekend at the Thomas More Shootout, during which the Spartans went 1-1.

Moving on

Wabash will play top seed UW-Whitewater in Saturday's regional final. It marks the second time Wabash will be in the regional final since 2002, when they fell to Mount Union.

Great success!

In the first two rounds of the playoffs, the Spartans faced two of the winningest programs in Div. III. Widener, the team Case faced in the first round, is fourth All-Time with 630 wins. Wabash is sixth with 585 victories. Unfortunately, Case Western Reserve can't add up the win totals of Case, Western Reserve, and football powerhouse Mather College.
