Letter to the Editor: Case's first Relay For Life will be in April

To the Editor:

Relay For Life is about coming together as a campus and a community to take up the fight against cancer. It is a way to celebrate the lives being saved from cancer and to remember those lost. Case Western Reserve University is partnering with the American Cancer Society to bring Relay For Life to our campus!

The festivities begin with a Kick Off Celebration:

Date: Feb. 15

Time: 12:30 to 2 p.m.

Location: Thwing Atrium

Come and enjoy music and free food while learning more about this great event!

The actual Relay For Life event, hosted by Case Western Reserve University, begins on April 18 at 6 p.m. and spans 18 hours. Teams of 8-15 people will camp out at the track located at The Village at 115. Throughout the event, team members take turns walking around the track while enjoying all sorts of activities including music, live entertainment, food, and games. The entire campus as well as the surrounding community is invited to attend and be a part of Relay For Life. Let's set a precedent for Relays to come here at Case!

These days, it is hard to find anyone that cancer hasn't touched through a friend, loved one, or family member. Relay For Life is about celebrating and remembering. The event begins with a Survivor Lap; all local cancer survivors are invited to participate in this initial celebration lap around the track. After dusk, a Luminaria Ceremony will be held to remember those touched with cancer by lighting luminaria and placing them all around the stadium. Purchasing a luminaria gives you the opportunity to remember someone close to you that has been touched by cancer.

Relay For Life is also about fighting back. Money raised by teams and participants at the event will go toward the American Cancer Society's research, education, local patient services, and advocacy.
