Taylor Branch comes in for the Third Annual Anisfield-Wolf/SAGES Lecture. Co-sponsored by the Baker-Nord Center for the Humanities and the SAGES program, the annual event coincides with awards administered by The Cleveland Foundation. Here is your chance to see both current and alum work by CIA students in an exhibit celebrating the 125 anniversary of the insititute. From Here to Infinity and the Big Bang, which opens today, is on view at CIA's Reinberger Galleries. CIA has gathered famous works by old-school artists like Robert Mangold, John Paul Miller, and Viktor Schreckengost, and the exhibit also features photographs, sculptures, and paintings by newer grads like Libby Black, Sarah Chuldenko, and Mark Reigelman. Another opportunity to see Take Me Out, a baseball-themed play that also deals with the tough issue of homosexuality in sports. The performance has been getting good reviews locally, but with its full-frontal male nudity and hard-hitting themes, it has also been stirring up a little controversy. Time: 8 p.m. Cost: $8-22. Tonight, the Film Society shows Blazing Saddles, the ultimate Western spoof from genius director Mel Brooks. A town where everyone seems to be named Johnson is in the way of the railroad. In order to grab their land, Hedley Lemar, a politically-connected nasty person, sends in his henchmen to make the town unlivable. After the sheriff is killed, the town demands a replacement. Hedley convinces the Governor to send the town the first black sheriff in the West, Bart, a sophisticated urbanite who will have some difficulty winning over the townspeople. Go to the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo to reach into an 11,000-gallon saltwater tank and feel the smooth skin of barbless stingrays as they swim about with sharks. Nearly 300,000 people experienced the rays when they made their first splash at the Zoo last summer, and you won't want to miss them this time around. Tuesday, Sept. 11
Ingram Hill, an opening act for Maroon 5, Lisa Marie Presley, and Hanson, comes to the House of Blues in Cleveland for a performance. Hollywood Records recently picked up this rock band and they had two tracks from their 2004 album June's Picture Show go up on the Billboard charts. Wednesday, Sept. 12
Check out the rotating, various artworks in the permanent collection of the Artists Archive of the Western Reserve. Artists from all over Cleveland submit their work to this venue, with the theme these days being Color Me Cleveland. Various exhibits have been displayed around Cleveland, but most of the work can be found at the AAWR. All artwork is put on auction at the end of the exhibit. Thursday, Sept. 13
UPB sponsors the event Chalk or Dye! Students are encouraged to come outside the Northside field (near Leutner) and enjoy the dwindling days of summer while engaging in some good, old-fashioned tie-dye. Pick up a free T-shirt, dye it, and get a popsicle while chalking the sidewalk. Or chalk first and then tie-dye. Good fun, food, and art. Time: 5 – 9 p.m. Cost: Free.
