Catholic commentary was offensive, ignorant

To the Editor:

I've noticed that the overall content quality of the editorial articles has decreased in spite of the increased writing ability of The Observer's "journalists." I am not a Catholic, however, I found Tulsi Roy's latest article not only offensive, but also ignorant. She clearly knows nothing about the Catholic Church nor Catholicism. I have no objection to intelligent criticism, but her article demonstrated a clear lack of research and knowledge of the institution and dogma that she unabashedly degraded. Just because editorials are opinion-based does not mean that the writers can get away with the blatant disregard of facts and fact- checking. Additionally, those reviewing the articles should hold their editorial writers to the same standards of reporting as the journalists in other sections.

And for the record, Ms. Roy, I attended a Catholic high school. We did not have an abstinence-only sex education program. We learned about STIs and different types of contraception. The teacher did highly and heavily encourage abstinence, but she did not leave us ignorant about other forms of birth control.
