Long distance trip, long distance wins

Case's men's track and field team was fortunate enough to be in Orlando, Fla. last weekend for the Walt Disney World Track & Field Invitational. The phenomenal weather wasn't enough for the Spartans. Winning was even better.

Ethan Kleinbaum won the 10,000-meter run for the men, and teammate Dominic Smith won the 3000-meter steeplechase. Smith was even more impressive, as he and Tyler Youngquist placed third and fourth, respectively, in the 1500-meter run. Junior Andrew Pozzutto led field events, and placed third in the javelin with a throw of 49.09 meters. "I've been doing this for a while now, so third place is a fitting place for me to be," said Pozzuto.

Obi Nwanna and Matt Kamalsky were not in Orlando, as they spent the weekend frolicking the campus of the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Fla. as part of the Hurricane Invitational. Nwanna placed second overall, winning the high and long jump. Kamalsky finished fifth in almost all of the events, placing fourth in the high jump to round out the weekend for the Spartans.

In Orlando, the women had some nice performances as well. Senior Esther Erb qualified for the NCAA championship by finishing first in the 10,000-meter run in career-best time. The Spartans would go on to sweep the top three spots. Andrea Fischione and Leanne Austin took second and third, respectively. Erb also won the 1500-meter run and teammate Elizabeth Ehrke placed fifth in the hammer throw.

The team travels to Emory in Atlanta this weekend.
