Chronic complaining must stop

To the Editor:

Seņor Itis, I have read your column for the last several weeks and have become increasingly upset with your "chronic complaints." However, last week, when you attacked one of the strongest aspects of the university, Greek Life, I reached my boiling point. Why is it OK for you, or anyone for that matter, to continually degrade certain aspects of this university? While I respect your right to find fault in university organizations and programs, I am truly sick of your tone and lack of willingness to move the university forward. Complaining will only perpetuate the claims that you write about, not spur people to action as you more than likely had hoped.

In my eyes, the number one problem among Case students is their ever-eager willingness to complain about anything and everything, but never actually do anything about it. Were your gripes towards Greek Life directed at IFC and Panhel before publishing last week's attempt at social criticism? I doubt it. As USG president, I can attest that nothing was sent to myself or the executive committee prior to your article several weeks ago when you issued your call to action to the Undergraduate Student Government. You are only perpetuating this problem with Case Western Reserve; chronic unconstructive complaining must end!

Why not talk about all the benefits of Greek Life in your last article? Why not talk about the sense of pride Greeks felt in their university and the Greek system during Greek Week? Perhaps it is negligence or lack of awareness of dedicated attempts of Case's Greek population, but more than likely it was just spite. I think you owe an apology to the students for writing off a third of this campus in one fell swoop.

Complaining is going to get us nowhere, and quite frankly I am sick of it. Why not call for students to join USG, UPB, Media Board, IFC, RHA, COC, or Panhel and make changes to improve the university? I am not sure – perhaps it is senioritis on your part. Complaining is much easier than actually attempting to effect change. You get out of college what you put into it, and complaining is only going to set you up to be a jaded senior.
