Seeds' slam, Sagartz' pitching keys to win
After a rough start to the game surrendering three runs in the top of the first, the Case softball team turned it around with an eight-hit, six-run second inning (fueled by a Lauren Seeds grand slam and stellar pitching from starting pitcher Ruthe Sagartz). With its monster inning, the Lady Spartans took the lead and never looked back, winning 7-5 at Case Field.
The second inning started with Teddi Jacobson (2-4, RBI) sending the first offering through the hole between first and second. A walk, two hits and a sacrifice fly later, Seeds (1-4, 4 RBI) sent the 1-1 pitch sailing over the centerfield fence. "I came up with runners on base and knew I had to score people when the opportunity arose. I swung and got a hold of the ball," said Jacobson.
In her second at-bat of the inning, Jacobson found open grass in shallow left field to drive in Case's sixth and final run of the inning. The Lady Spartans managed to string together six straight hits off Baldwin-Wallace pitcher Mackenzie Rohrbacher with the inning ending on a spectacular snag by shortstop Katrina Resek, who then doubled up the runner on second base.
Sagartz pitched well, giving up five runs, only one of which was earned by the Yellow Jackets. In her seven innings, she gave up five hits and struck out 10 while keeping Baldwin-Wallace hitters on their toes with an array of well-located fastballs and off-speed pitches.
Other notables for the Lady Spartans include senior Adriane Lewandowski's performance, going 3-3,who knocked in an insurance run with her fifth-inning single. Chelsae Poelking also had a great day at the plate with three hits, one of which was a double to the warning track. Every Case batter reached base as well.
