Spartan Spotlight: Elise Snell
The Basics: Elise Snell is a junior biomedical Engineering major from Valparaiso, Ind. who is active in the Case Association of Student Athletes. She's played three years of Case volleyball as an outside hitter. This year is her 12th playing volleyball.
Joe Amick: What inspired you to play volleyball?
Elise Snell: My older sister played soccer, so I had to do the opposite, and it was the sport I could find with the least amount of running.
JA: I like how you think. Who's your favorite athlete (I'm guessing it's not your sister)?
ES: David Beckham because he is just sooo nice to look at.
JA: Yeah, I'd like to cuddle with him too. I hope my father doesn't read this. Academic Honors?
ES: Do these exist as an engineer?
JA: Hey, who told you to start asking questions? (By answering a question with a question, I effectively regain control of the situation.) How about athletic honors?
ES: Two varsity letters
JA: Not bad. Best volleyball memory?
ES:Championships in Boston my freshman year.
JA: Worst volleyball memory?
ES: Getting injured and having surgery.
JA: Oh, quit whining. Where do you see yourself in 10 Years?
ES: Married with kids, and working with a bunch of nerdy engineers.
JA: What's something most people don't know about you?
ES: Lets just say…most volleyball players don't wear underwear under their spandex.
JA: Hey folks, it's news you can use. What makes volleyball stand out from other sports?
ES: Girls are expected to stay low, hit hard, and play with balls.
JA: Now now, miss, we'll have none of that saucy talk in this news paper! If you could invite any three people to dinner, living or dead, who would they be and why?
ES: My grandpa, because I never got to meet him, George Bush, because I would like to know why he makes the decisions that he does, and Ben Folds, because I love his music.
JA: Would you rather have the strength of 1000 women, be able to fly, or be invisible?
ES: Invisible, because you would get to see and hear things you weren't supposed to.
JA: I'd choose to be invisible too because I'm shy. (Please note that I made the same comment last week.) What's your least favorite thing about volleyball?
ES: Wedgies.
JA: You'd think that there'd be something worse… If you could be a guy for a day, what would you do?
ES: I just think it would be interesting to see how everything worked from the other side.
JA: I said a guy, not a ghost. What would we find in your locker right now that might surprise us?
ES: A paper with my locker combo, because after three weeks of season I still forget it.
JA: So what goes through your mind during a match?
ES: I just really try to focus on whatever I need to improve on for that day.
JA: Oh, I was hoping for something more wedgie-oriented. Which would you rather: watch Blades of Glory or get hit in the face by a volleyball?
ES: Get hit in the face with a volleyball, it has happened before.
JA: Who is the best athlete you've ever played with and why?
ES: Does attempting to dance with Drew Gooden in a club and falling on your face count?
JA: It certainly does. What's the weirdest nickname you ever had?
ES: Nips or Trucker Snell.
JA: I assume "Trucker Snell" refers to your penchant for urinating into plastic bottles. Speaking of which, what's it like being a sex symbol to millions of lonely Case guys?
ES: It's tough, but somebody has got to do it.
JA: What's the high point in a volleyball player's season?
ES: UAA Championships at the end of the season.
JA: Well, good luck with that.
