The Spartans claimed the most unique trophy in college sports for the first time since 1994 on Saturday after defeating the College of Wooster, 30-17 (see story, page 12). The first meeting between the two schools took place in
1984, when the North Coast Conference was formed. Bob Baird, an economics professor at Case, and his brother, Bill Baird, an economics professor at Wooster, wanted to do something to encourage the athletes at each school. The idea for the trophy was borne out of their mutual love of fishing. "We never knew that it would take on a life of its own," said Bill. His favorite fish is the first one, an intricately made small mouth bass made by the late Bob Baird's wife, Eugenie. "It's a work of art," said Bill. This year's addition is a mahi-mahi.
