Case musical ensembles offer packed fall lineups
This semester, the music department is offering a plethora of concerts and lectures to cater to a wide spectrum of audiences. There are some widely publicized events, as well as some that are not as well-known. The good news is that most of these concerts are free and open to all students and guests: a great opportunity for anyone to take a break and enjoy listening to music played by fellow students.
In regard to choral music, the main choral groups on campus, Concert Choir, University Singers, and Early Music Singers, are giving a variety of concerts through the next few months. First, on Sat. Oct. 13 at 7:30 p.m., all three ensembles will be performing together for the CWRU Choral Showcase at Harkness Chapel. Concert Choir will be performing in two other concerts, one of which will be on Nov. 17 at 7:30 p.m. in Harkness Chapel; their other performance is a part of Holiday Circlefest and will be held at the Church of the Covenant on Dec. 2, beginning at 2 p.m.. University Singers will also be performing, together with the Camerata Orchestra, on Sun, Dec. 2 at 3 p.n. in Harkness Chapel. There are other vocal ensembles on campus, including many a capella groups. As for their concerts, watch for posters and announcements around campus.
The instrumental ensembles are also presenting plenty of concerts. To open their concert season, Symphonic Winds and Wind Ensemble are performing at Severance Hall on Oct. 14 at 4 p.m.; tickets cost $5 and are available at the Severance Hall box office. Wind Ensemble is presenting two other concerts as well. The first is Nov. 18 at 2:30 p.m. in Harkness Chapel; the second, also featuring Jazz Ensemble, is on Nov. 30 and Dec. 1 at 7:30 p.m. in the Thwing Ballroom. Tickets will be available for $8 in Haydn 201. The Case-University Circle Symphony Orchestra's first concert of the year is in the Thwing Ballroom on Nov. 6 at 7:30, featuring Joyce Oh playing Grieg's Piano Concerto in A minor. In addition to these ensembles, there are several other interesting groups performing. The Baroque orchestra is presenting two concerts, one on Oct. 15, and the other on Nov.19; percussion ensemble is performing Nov. 10. There will also be a chamber music concert featuring Beethoven String Quartets on Nov. 14. All of the aforementioned concerts will be on their respective dates at 7:30 in Harkness Chapel. Finally, the Marching Spartans will also be performing at every home football game, as well as at the soccer game Sat., Oct. 6.
The music department not only has student ensembles performing this semester, but also has many guest artists, faculty performances, and lectures. The Collegium Musicum and Chapel, Court, and Countryside concert series are presenting concerts featuring guest artists playing authentic medieval and Renaissance music. In addition, there is a recital featuring the early music faculty on Nov. 16 at 8 p.m. in Harkness Chapel. As for lectures, Claudia Gorbman will be discussing "Songs and Meanings in the Movies" on Oct. 18 at 4 p.m. in Clark 206. There are several other lectures in the Music and Culture series, as well as others, happening this semester.
There are countless opportunities to hear outstanding performances and to support fellow students, faculty, and guests as they perform, usually on campus and for free. Also be sure to check the music department's website for further details on all of these events and others at http://music.case.edu/.
