Spartan Spotlight: Chad Skidmore
The Basics: Chad Skidmore is a senior chemistry and pre-med student. The Centerville, Ohio native plays goal keeper and has been participating in the sport for 16 years. Skidmore was named All-UAA Honorable Mention in 2004 and 2005 and UAA Defensive Player of the Week in 2006 and 2007.
Joe Amick: Who inspired you to play soccer?
Chad Skidmore: My parents forced me when I was six.
JA: They didn't force you; they inspired you. Any hobbies?
CS: I'll pretty much do anything.
JA: Who's your favorite athlete?
CS: Chris Sabo.
JA: I don't know…I hear Roger Clemens is quite a golfer. Best soccer memory?
CS: Winning the UAA last year.
JA: Sounds good. How about your worst soccer memory?
CS: Losing 12 of 17 games my freshman year.
JA: What a turnaround. What's your favorite quote?
CS: "Don't worry about it" – my roommates.
JA: I wish I asked follow-ups. Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
CS: Married, kids, you know, the whole family thing.
JA: Something most people don't know about you?
CS: My first name is Stephen.
JA: Chad's better. What makes soccer stand out from other sports?
CS: I assume you mean other than the fact that it requires exceptional skill, talent, intellect, strategy, extreme physical conditioning, and strength? Sorry, other than that I can't think of anything else that makes it different.
JA: Soccer's hard, we get it. If you could invite any three people to dinner, living or dead, who would they be and why?
CS: Danny DeVito, Howard Stern ,and Elisha Cuthbert. With the way those two look, Elisha would have no choice but to go home with me.
JA: Talk about strategy. Would you rather have the strength of 1000 men, be able to fly, or be invisible?
CS: I would have to say being invisible. I already have the strength of 1000 men and if I was invisible I could sneak on any commercial flight in first class so no need to be able to fly.
JA: Talk about strategy. If they made a movie about your life, who would you want to play you?
CS: Robert Redford. Only an actor with that kind of talent could pull off playing me.
JA: You guys also have the same eyeballs. You could be one place but Case (like you would ever want to leave). Where would you go?
CS: Boston.
JA: They do have the second-best team in baseball. What's your least favorite thing about soccer?
CS: The fact that I have to do the cool down exercise at the end of a practice or game… which in fact warms me up, since all I do is stand.
JA: If you could be a girl for a day, what would you do?
CS: Oh, you know, a little of this, a little of that.
JA: If you could participate in any other sport, which would you pick and why?
CS: Football. Getting to rest every eight seconds sounds good to me.
JA: Be nice. Finish this sentence: Soccer is like a girl…
CS: …because most Americans don't understand either one.
JA: What goes through your mind during the game?
CS: I hope Z takes this kid out so I don't have to make a save.
JA: What's one thing that most people don't know about soccer?
CS: An ancient version of it evolved from using the heads of beaten enemies to kick around as balls.
JA: In modern times, we refer to those ancient sportsmen as 'soccer hooligans.' What are your goals for this season?
CS: Not to get hurt and get back into the playoffs.
JA: Well, good luck with that.
